EIA - Esoteric Assays

Esoteric testing is the analysis of unique, "niche" assays not routinely performed in clinical laboratories as they often require specialized personnel. Many of these tests have been or are currently being analyzed using RIA (radioimmunoassay) technique which is both costly and time consuming. Now many of these tests are available in EIA (enzyme-immuno assay) methodology.

Free Testosterone, SHBG and Cortisol are key in the assessment health and well being in both men and women, and can useful in the diagnosis of conditions such as hypogonadism, hepatic cirrhosis, thyrotoxicosis, hyperandrogenism, hirsutism, polycystic ovarian disease, and Cushing's Syndrome. Aldosterone and 17-OH Progesterone are important assays in the diagnosis of adrenal disorders such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia. CH-50 is a functionality test of Complement CH50, used to screen for immunodeficiencies.

Many hospital labs send out such unique testing to other laboratories that specialize in esoteric testing. The availability of these EIA esoteric alternatives may now make it possible for small to medium labs to run these types of tests in-house, alongside their other autoimmune testing.
